'More than Gold' Spirit on the Rock 2012:
Pentecost weekend was celebrated by Jersey Association of Catholic Youth holding their annual Spirit on the Rock youth weekend retreat. This year the theme was More Than Gold and looked at the Olympic values of Respect, Friendship and Excellence.
Over 140 young people joined the weekend as well as many more from the older Youth 2000 group and youth committee working as stewards. Our main guest speaker was James Parker the Catholic Coordinator for the Olympics, who led various talks over the weekend on the theme. The young people participated in sports tasters as well as the opportunity for drama, art, dance and music.
Jersey Education Sports and Culture department helped with arranging the use of Les Quennevais Sports Centre. Parishioners turned out in great numbers to support in helping with catering and local companies were very generous in donating food. Young people who had been to World Youth Days in the past gave testimonies and encouraged the participants to not be afraid to act on the call of Pope Benedict to be ‘saints & witnesses’.
Our youth committee chairperson, 15 year old Christina Escorcio, told them ‘it’s not about being cool to be Catholic, though it can be, it’s about being firm in the faith’.
On Saturday evening there was a very powerful Service of Light to welcome the Coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost Candle light procession, drama, readings, prayers and talks ended with a brilliant ‘flashmob’ style worship dance.
Beaulieu School supplied overnight accommodation and all went well despite a massive storm! Sunday morning, carrying banners made in the art workshop, they all took part in a walk of witness through St. Helier to St. Thomas for the closing Mass. The Knights of St. Columba turned out to help with road crossing whilst parents and other volunteers helped with cleaning and restoring all venues.
Over 130 young people came forward during Mass and were elected as prepared and ready to request Confirmation in June following an 8 month formation.
It was a true stewardship in action event with so many sharing time, talents and treasure with our young people. In the words of one young person it was ‘legend’.
